34
Gillygate
No. 34 was bought by the Trust in August
2000 due to the fact that it formed part of a block of Victorian
houses Nos. 30 to 36 inclusive, of which we already owned
No. 36. No. 34 is, obviously, of the same construction as
36 but it had one special attraction at the rear of the property,
a “banana house”. This was originally used to
ripen green bananas prior to sending them to the market for
selling.
Dilapidated and in disuse for many years,
it was decided that as there was not much demand for “banana
houses”(!) the property should be converted into a one
bedroom maisonette.
This was carried out with loving care and
the end result is a unique maisonette with a private patio
and stunning views of the bar walls and York Minster. |
